I'm just a guy with a boomerang
Jul. 17th, 2010 12:59 amA very successful visit to
biggieshorty was last weekend. We saw American Idiot, starring Jonathan Gallagher and one mister Nate Fick Stark Sands, who has a beautiful voice. I thought it was pretty awesome. V v loud. We saw it from the front row, courtesy of Tiff's ticket lottery win, and had the experience of being sweated on by the dancing/headbanging when they were right at the edge of the stage. There wasn't a story, really, and sometimes I didn't get what the song was supposed to be about, but the cast is super talented, and the (vast majority of) songs are excellent and excellently arranged, and the stagecraft was AMAZING. My favorite bit of that was when they took this piece of vertical scaffolding and tipped it on its side, and then used it as a bus for the song Holiday.
Also on the visit, there was much playing with the new kitten, Digby!

And flailing over how fucking cute he is when he sleeps.

And there was much watching of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is just as awesome as you've heard. I love Sokka so goddamn much. And since beginning last weekend, I have now acquired all three seasons, finished watching the first, and I imagine making headway into season 2 will be a lot of what I accomplish this weekend. And when I went to imdb for the show, I learned that Ann from Arrested Development is the voice of Katara and MOTHERFUCKING RUFIO FROM HOOK IS THE VOICE OF PRINCE ZUKO. Maybe everyone else already knew that, but if someone had told me that I would have watched long ago. My eleven year old self looooooooooooooved Rufio, I thought he was just about the best thing ever. (Enough that I have an icon!)
There was a moment in time this week, when LJ said it was going to purge all inactive journals. They later either clarified or backpedaled to say they would only purge inactive ones that had never made more than one placeholder post. But this made me remember a failed experiment in a joint NYC apartment livejournal. Here are the entries copied and pasted for posterity in case LJ ever breaks its promise.

10:37 pm - on T's increasing desire to sell her eggs
T: Also, I'm not using them...maybe someone else wants to.
N: Yeah, I'd forgotten about the whole 'helping out infertile women' part. It's not just pure torture for no reason.

11:40 pm - for once, he wasn't being incredibly crass.
N: *swaggering past M's room post-date* I need to replenish my fluids!
M and T: EW EW EW EW EW EW EW!
N: *nearly spitting out orange soda* Not like that! Oh god! Sorry! I didn't mean...oh, lord.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3:13 am - insight into M's deepest desires...
N: "Where would you want to be taken on a date?"
T: "Bowling. But I'm perhaps not representative of the dating public."
M: "*tiny voice* Petting zoo."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably of interest to no one but me and
biggieshorty but I am happy to save them all the same. Hee.
Other events of note: LAST NIGHT THERE WAS A FUCKING EARTHQUAKE. 3.6, which I know is minor, but that is big for the DC region! It happened at 5am ish and I woke up because the windows were rattling and there was this sustained rumbling. If I lived near a traintrack, I would have assumed a big old train was zooming by. Since I don't, my groggy self idly wondered if a big truck was driving by, before remembering I lived next to a parking lot, not street, and then I went back to sleep. Did anyone else around here feel that?
So, yesterday I get something in the mail from AAA, and I figure it must be a reminder about renewing my policy or whatever. No, no. Not that.
It's a birthday card. (My birthday is in August.)

Why, how sweet, AAA, I think naively. UNTIL I READ IT.

Oh, would you look at that. They are trying to sell me life insurance, THANKS FOR THE SUBTEXT THAT I AM INCHING CLOSER TO DEATH I ALREADY FELT AWESOME ABOUT TURNING 30. Upon close read, it appears they are trying to warn me that it's far cheaper to buy it now when I am in my 20s than next month after I turn 30. Thanks, but I am going to call this marketing strategy a swing and a miss for AAA.
Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled
Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching
Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)
Day 04 - Your favorite show ever
Day 05 - A show you hate
Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite TV show
Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show
Day 08 - A show everyone should watch
Day 09 - Best scene ever
Day 10 - A show you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving
The Vampire Diaries would certainly apply. I had no expectations, it was just on before Supernatural, but it very quickly won my interest and then a little later won my tv love. Friday Night Lights I thought would be a dumb show about football, but the pilot was free from iTunes, and so I eventually got around to watching and was shocked to learn it was a beautiful, exquisite show about life, love and loss in a small Texas town. And I hated Brennan in the first episode, she was so awkward and not what I was expecting, that I thought I would hate Bones. But then I realized it was on purpose, and she was perceived as awkward within the show's universe, so that made me feel better, and she and Booth and the squints grew on me.
