From Sci-Fi to Syfy
Dec. 11th, 2012 01:43 amDid anyone else watch the Syfy 20th anniversary special that was on tonight? Oh man, Ben Browder, I weep for your facial hair. Please let it be for a role, please let it be for a role. The mustache reminded me of no one more than Elmer Fudd, which, whyyyyyyyy do that, you beautiful man?
Also, it was sorta interesting to hear network-sponsored almost-but-not-quite criticisms of the network? Like in the Farscape segment when they were all show was yay and critical acclaim and then oh noes, we were cancelled, but the fans sure rallied around us. They moved suuuuuuuper quickly to the fan campaign angle that enabled Peacekeeper Wars, but never really shone a spotlight on the fact that the very network being feted whose anniversary special YOU ALL ARE PARTICIPATING IN were the ones who cancelled you. And they only vaguely alluded to what caused me the most outrage back in the day: that at the end of season 3, they got renewed for seasons 4 and 5, and so they arced it out accordingly, but then the network partly through season 4 decided to axe the show, but didn't tell them in time to wrap anything up. Oh, the rage I felt back in 2002 when this happened. I sent many postcards made from cracker boxes to Bonnie Hammer (didn't even need to look up the name, it is seared by outrage into my fannish memory) that said "Crackers DO matter! Save Farscape!" Also, they managed to gloss over the BSG ending being largely hated and several other awkward cancellation discussions.
At least people could openly mock the SyFy rebrand and the Saturday night original movies. And Eric Balfour, charming in all interviews, as usual. I intend to watch the movies sometimes, if the premise makes me cackle, but they don't always work, even as camp, honestly. (See: Mongolian Death Worms.) I am much more susceptible to the siren song of made-for-tv Christmas movies, which are my Kryptonite this time of year, especially on Lifetime. I find most of them terrible in a charming way, whereas I find most SyFy original movies just terrible, and not even enjoyably so. But their mini-series are often so good! It's a mystery.
And here's a test for you. How long can you watch this video about a dog rescued from a dog fighting ring before you tear up? ( Read more... )
