you're like a May morning
Jun. 17th, 2010 11:40 pmI have mixed feeling about Burn Notice so far this season. I don't know what I think I about the addition of Jesse. I know I am probably supposed to have mixed feelings, because the team still does, but I am still lukewarm at best. I am just not loving the execution. And both Michael and his mom felt a little out of character this episode. 1) Michael would totally not object to helping the dock worker, and the only reason I think they made him object was so Jesse could stick up for the little guy and win points with the audience, and 2) there is no way Michael's mom chooses Michael lying to Jesse, of all possible things, as the thing to angrily confront Michael about. And now all of a sudden she is not sure that Michael's doing good? Pfffft, she went to jail, like, 3 episodes ago for obstruction because she didn't believe the FBI when they told her he was doing bad? I mean, I know they probably wanted to shake up the dynamic; Sam, Michael, and Fi have been a well-oiled machine for over a season, and any lingering Sam/Fi mistrust is long gone, so I get it. I just don't love it.
Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled
Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching
Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)
Day 04 - Your favorite show ever
To the surprise of no one, Robin of Sherwood. The show of my heart. It's the only show/movie that ever got Robin Hood right, in my opinion. These were outlaws, who were often hungry, exhausted, and dirty, and just getting by. The fights are excellent, more so because they often have a desperate urgency. You aren't sure they are all going to win, and sometimes they don't. But they hold together under the leadership of Robin, and the love they have for each other. I love it all, and not even the actors genuine 80s hair can diminish my love.
I fell in love with this show as a child, I think I was about 10 when it aired on MPT (Maryland Public Television, my local PBS station) and it was on at 10pm on Saturdays, and my mom would let me stay up to watch. Then it reran when I was 13 or so, but very late at night, but I had the wherewithall to tape them (thwarted a few times by pledge breaks screwing up the times I had preset for it to be recorded) and that was what I had to watch over and over until college, when I got the whole series on PAL VHS, and my dad got me a special VCR to play them on. (That and my UK sets of Buffy.) Then, most excitingly, after college it came out on Region 1 DVD, but only in the UK. And hooray for my sister getting it for me. (And now it is out on US DVD normally.) It was my hall theme as an RA at college. And every week, I would show an episode to my hall as a study break, and I think I managed to win a few converts.

Oh hai, ILU, show! Nothing's forgotten.

Still the prettiest.
And you know what's weird, at least for my fannishness? I am not remotely interested in behind the scenes stuff or fanfic. I don't want to see the blooper reels, I don't want to see the cast in jeans when on set but not filming, I don't want to listen to the commentaries tell me about production, and I don't want to read fic. (And unlike 90-some% of the online fandom I have come across, I am not all about Gisburne. *shrugs*) As far as I am concerned, this show is a documentary. It's how it really happened, 80s "special" "effects" and all. And I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I want people to shoot flaming arrows into a pond at my funeral. If I could find a good clip of that on YouTube, I'd post it, but no luck. (Well, this vid of RoS set to Blaze of Glory includes some shots, but it's v v spoilery.)
The slightly more modern runners-up: X-Files, Buffy, Veronica Mars.
