I started watching the backlog of The Chicago Code episodes on my DVR only after I had been hearing its renewal was iffy, so while bummed, I was mentally prepared for its fate. But, I must say, I will really, really miss its credit sequence. I grooved along to it every time and never fastforwarded. (Actually, once or twice I rewound!) Here it is, for those interested or wondering what Billy Corgan has been up to with his time.

In random news, at a stoplight, I was behind a car with a license plate that said: MI PRSHS. Hehehehe.

And this? BLOWS MY MIND. Otto von Hapsburg, a Would-Be Monarch, Dies at 98. Dude was the son of the last Hapsburg emperor! While one part of me can do the math and know it is possible on paper, the larger part of me can just not believe that someone from that world, a world so radically different than our own, could possibly still have been alive in modernity. You can't live long in Vienna without absorbing history, and Hapsburg history in particular, but to me, the Austro-Hungarian empire felt a little like when in the US there are signs saying George Washington slept here. I've toured the palaces, and it felt like the past that shaped Austria, that Austria liked best to have represent its history, but never once on any tour were they like, oh by the way, and the son of the dude who last lived here is still alive! Nuts. It's so long ago in my conception of the world, to realize it all spanned one person's lifetime, it's just a more drastic mental shock than when I realize my parents were (young) adults during the time of coloreds only water fountains. And that all feels a bit long-winded and inarticulate so here is my summation: DUDE.

Perhaps this weekend I will finish She by H. Rider Haggard (where the phrase She Who Must Be Obeyed comes from). I only got halfway through while at the beach, which brought my beach reading tally to 8.5. 5 vampire books + 2 dragon books + 1 werewolf book + .5 mystical immortal she-demon types.

And, finally finishing a 30 day meme I started last summer...

Day 30 - Saddest character death See icon.

Anya was sad. Buffy was really sad. The significant death in the Horatio Hornblower series that I don't want to spoil was really fucking sad. But this, this, from my favorite tv show ever, that I first watched when I was a kid around age 10 and was so, so unprepared for? It GUTTED me. I cried my little eyes out, and was utterly distraught and inconsolable. How many times had they always found a way out of being caught? And for that matter, how often do shows kill off their main character, much less shows about Robin Hood KILLING OFF ROBIN HOOD? It's been 20 years or so since I first saw this, and I still either tear up or outright cry, such is its power over me. (Likewise, the music from The Gift still affects me.)

Even the 80s color correction mojo happening can't diminish its power, but that could also be because I CAN BARELY SEE THROUGH MY TEARS. RIP, Robin of Loxley. Nothing's forgotten.
