If anyone is looking for a solid little action movie, I really enjoyed John Wick. It is exactly as advertised: Keanu Reeves revenge killing a ton of dudes, so if that holds no appeal, don't go, as literally almost nothing else happens. But what it does, it does well and stylishly.
I agree with this EW.com review: "So it may be strange to say this about a movie that consists of Keanu Reeves wrecking dudes across an entire city for an hour and a half, but John Wick feels surprisingly small for a modern action movie. And it’s such a great feeling."
I am glad I knew the basic premise, though, so I was emotionally prepared for The Thing That Happens that sets of the chain of events of the rest of the movie. Guys, it's not just that the dog dies; the dog is MURDERED. Before the movie starts, Keanu's wife has just died of some disease they don't name. Before she died, though, she got him a puppy so he wouldn't be alone and would have someone to love while he grieved. Keanu gets robbed (they want his car, which he loves a lot) and they kill his dog while they are at it. And then the whole rest of the movie is him going after who did it (the son of a crime boss, so there are plenty of bodyguards in his way).
A solid action movie, with something extra for those who find Keanu in a suit appealing (mrorw). Bridget Regan and Adrianne Palicki are in it, and although BR has a pretty minor role, it's always nice to see her. Just throwing this out there, since I know the movie isn't setting the box office on fire.
In TV news, I am loving Reign. Megan Follows is a national treasure and absolutely the best thing about the show, but the earnestness of the cracked out craziness of the show is a close second. A twist last week made me cackle. Not laugh, but cackle with glee. It is so very entertaining, and excellent eye candy to boot. I need Catherine icons.
In TVD news, I find myself with surprising Bonnie-Damon feelings! He hugged the teddy bear!! He called her cell just to hear her voice!!! I want them to be BFFs, at a minimum.
The show has surprised me with how Stefan/Caroline is playing out. Stefan has been such a dick, I am totally with Caroline. He absolutely deserves her anger. The scene I want to see is Enzo proposing himself to Caroline as a way to get under Stefan's skin, a way to make him care. And then Caroline and Enzo hatefuck for a while, while Stefan gets his shit together and makes things up to her!
I don't care an iota about Liam. Given the available options, I want to see Elena date Matt. They were always cute together, and Matt deserves a little happiness, poor thing. It won't be the show's endgame, but there's no reason they can't be happy a while. And, awww, Alaric's human!! I like Jo, I hope she sticks around. It was only last episode I figured out she was Kai's sister, because I just didn't do the math from when the murders would have been and their age differences just didn't make me think of them in the same context. But knowing it makes me fear for her safety. Be careful! Alaric has no ring, he needs to be careful too!!
And the SPN 200th episode was really pretty great. Many of their fandom mentions have been a bit wince inducing, but this was just right. I LOVE that the musical got many details right that the Winchesters/SPN have forgotten because OF COURSE fans would get them correct, and the show not just knows that, but showed that. Like how musical!dean is wearing the leather jacket from early seasons, and how they know when he should be wearing the amulet, and remembering Adam, etc. Made me so happy. And the songs were pretty great and that version of Wayward Son was genuinely beautiful and made me a little teary. Thanks, show!
