Ok, onto something else (although given time, it will make me cry, just you wait). I'm watching the French language track of Serenity, and the translation is pissing me off. Now, I understand that Whedon-speak is ill-suited for French and sentences like, "there'll come a time when there won't be room for naughty men like us to slip about" (paraphrase), just aren't going to be easy to capture both the flavor and the substance. I know that. I'm even ok with "Shiny!" not being translated as shiny, because that's not something normal in English either and could be confusing. ("Jayne saying, "Shiny! Let's be bad guys" was rendered as, "Excellent! Soyons des méchants!") But when there is an opportunity to keep the substance AND the flavor, quite often this translation isn't taking it.
Like during the mule chase scene. When the Reavers (in French as the Ravagers) are getting close and Mal says "Faster! Faster would be better!" part of the humor is his panic taking the form of polite understatement. In French it was just, "Faster! They're about to catch us!" There is absolutely no reason they couldn't have said 'faster would be better.' Hmph.
Boo to you, French translator, boo to you.
