beginnings of Hurricane Sandy

Here's a little stream out back of my complex. Except, wait, there isn't a stream out back normally. This is just from all the rain, with the heaviest parts of the rain still to come. There are trees all around my complex, which make me a little nervous today. The two trees closest to my apartment were felled by other storms. One fell over during Snowmageddon and the other just from a thunderstorm in September. So hopefully the other, slightly farther away trees will stay safely rooted.
A few times last night once the rain had started, I could hear this hissing in my vents. Not sure what caused it, but if I didn't know better, I'd say the Chamber of Secrets was opened again. Let's hope that doesn't continue, because I was super creeped out.

The cats don't seem to mind any of this. I'm home from work because of the storm so they've been enjoying the snuggles, and I brought in the balcony furniture, so there are new things to climb on. Add a blanket on top of stacked deck chairs and ta da! Instant cat fort.
I have food and flashlights and candles, but no D batteries to power the radio. I tried 5 stores, and D batteries were nowhere to be found, so if I lose power, I'll essentially be cut off from information. (I don't have a smart phone.) Text messages or running out to the car to listen to the car radio will be my options, I guess. While I have power, I'll be switching between watching my DVR and obsessively refreshing news feed, and eating perishable things from my fridge. I hope I don't lose power; where I live, the powerlines are underground, so hopefully it won't come to that.
Stay safe and warm and dry, fellow East Coasters!
