Got back from vacation yesterday. It was lovely. I was in Kitty Hawk and it was just awesome. A week at the beach, and I did nothing. I didn't read a headline, touch the internet, nothing. The only piece of news that reached me was the Crocodile Hunter (a STINGRAY? WTF? But, seriously, dude was living on borrowed time).

I did, however, read Le Colonel Chabert by Balzac, which was depressing, Jonathna Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, which ROCKED, and The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett, which was crisp and amusing but a little unsatisying, and I saw Crank, which sucked a LOT, and Little Miss Sunshine, which was awesome and sad and hilarious. I also didn't sunburn, whoooo!

The beach at sunset.

Taken from the deck of the house.

The beach house, taken from the beach.

The living room with a view of the ocean.

Seriously, it has spoiled me for any subsequent beach vacations when I am not right on the beach. ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES.

I knew nothing about the book -- it was out on a table of Best Sellers or something at B&N, and I picked it up. So, well done, cover designer, because you certainly did your job.

I loved it. I read it pretty much straight through, like, I refused to do anything else. It got its hooks into me. I didn't really have any expectations, but I didn't expect it to be so charming or sad or creepy or AWESOME.
