Greetings from Austria -- where the hills are alive with the sound of music and cries for help from women chained in basements. *shudder* It's all anyone is talking about here, as you can imagine. The only thing that is particularly Austrian in nature about this whole thing, I think, is everyone's strict code to mind their own business. It's considered RUDE to talk to your neighbors beyond basic passing pleasantries.

Anyway, not this weekend but the next I'm headed to Stuttgart and Munich for a few days. Yay! My first trip. I thought I would have already traveled way more, but life kept getting in the way. I needed most Saturdays for errands and boring life stuff, because it's the only time stores are open when I am not at work. Austria is still scheduled for Hausfraus, I really wonder how all the stores without weekend hours, and there are plenty, stay in business. And then it was winter, and I didn't want to travel. But now that spring is here I have the itch!

Help me choose! In June, I'll go see my sister in London for a long weekend, and in July my parents are coming, and we'll probably go to Switzerland. And Bratislava, Prague, and Budapest are just a couple of hours away, so I can swing those in day/weekend trips. But where should I go for my vacation, or a longer trip this fall? Ack! (France is not on the list because I've been to Paris recently, and I've traveled in France. And it's awesome and I love it, but there are so many places I've never been, it's farther down the list this time.)

And a separate question, how can I keep raspberries from going moldy so fast?!? It has happened now every single time (4? 5?) that I have bought a little packet of raspberries that within just days, they are going moldy. Is there a trick? I'm keeping them in the fridge, is that wrong? Or do I just have a crappy grocer?

I watched Sweeney Todd this week, and I think that may be the hottest Johnny Depp has ever looked. And that made me wonder what that says about me. And do Christina Ricci and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers know that the young couple STOLE THEIR FACES? I quite liked it, but Helena Bonham-Carter was just not up for the singing. Johnny Depp was, though, and that's all I cared about. Mmmmmmm.

B.C. and I did not spend much time in either Cologne or Düsseldorf (like, 24 hours? less?), but we seemed to agree that if you are not going there to drink copious amounts of amazing local beer, neither place is that exciting. Cologne was fun and had some cool sights; Düsseldorf seemed smaller, more commercial and less interesting beyond the Altstadt. However, Kölsch and Alt are like THE BEST THINGS EVER, and heck, they're only half an hour apart...

I've never even heard of Kölsch or Alt, thanks for the tip!

Raspberries, even from good grocers, can go moldy the same day you buy them. If yours are lasting a few days, you're doing well. Don't bother trying to get them not to mold--you will never succeed.

Ok, thank you! That does make me feel better, I just thought I failed at raspberries.

Italy: do the Amalfi Coast. Positano is unbelievably beautiful, and it's all near Napoli and thus Pompeii/Herculaneum. Not too far from Florence, which is unbelievable. Or go to Cinque Terra and Florence. Turin is great, but one of the nicest aspects is the proximity to the Alps, and you're just coming from Switzerland. So, yeah.

I had left Naples off the list because they still have literal TONS of garbage in the street. Stupid mafia. On the other hands, the hotels are empty, I saw a report, so maybe I could get a good deal! But I am hoping they'll resolve this problem during my time here so I can go!
