So, I'd gotten used to always being behind on all things pop culture. People would talk about movies and tv shows I just couldn't see yet. But not today!

Guess who just saw Indiana Jones 4?! Why an 8pm on Wed 21 May showing was allowed in Vienna, I have no idea, but yay!

Overall verdict: deeply silly but very fun. A bit like the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, in that while it may not be as good as the originals, it's entertaining as always.

So the crystal skull? Is from an alien. That is more or less clear all along, but the movie lost some people in the viewing audience I saw it with right at the end when that became evident on screen. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a heathen, but aliens require no more or less a suspension of my disbelief than all the christianity stuff in the earlier movies. As far as I am concerned, if god can melt Nazis, then aliens can build El Dorado.

Harrison Ford is as reliably entertaining as Indy ever is. Shia LeBeouf was good, it was cute what they did with his character. And the internet was right, of course he's his son. Marion had less to do, sad to say. She gets one or two good moments, but doesn't do all that much. However, she is not constantly in danger (well, no more than the rest of them) nor in need of constant rescue so that's something. Cate Blanchett has a majorly ridiculous accent, but they weren't really going for subtlety with her character, I suppose.

The janitor from Scrubs is in it briefly as an FBI gman. He got a whoo from the Americans in the audience; I don't think the Austrians knew who he was. (I saw this in an English language theater.) And Alan Dale from the OC is in it too.

It had some good jokes at nods to previous movies, but I think they didn't go too overboard with it, happy to say. I was afraid it would be obnoxious with the injokes, but not too many. The action sequences are a bit sillier this time around, to their detriment, but the whole thing is sillier. I don't know, it's not like the first movies aren't preposterous in their own way, but they pretend not to be, but this movie doesn't try to pretend.

Still, worth seeing.

And now non-spoiler things: Oh Ray Winstone, I do love you so. But age was not kind, methinks. When y'all see the character of Mac, please try to imagine him as he is in my icon, young and oh so pretty.

And, they give Shia LeBoeuf this exact outfit at the beginning.

That's from The Wild One, but I've never seen it so I don't know if that's a joke or reference of some kind. Anyone?
