August 1980:
"Magic" by Olivia Newton-John.
I'd never heard it before, but that's pretty catchy.
Is anyone else watching Vampire Diaries? I am SO CONFUSED RIGHT NOW! I do not understand the D/S/C dynamic demonstrated in this episode AT ALL. The brothers are both aware she's a vampire and are fucking her, but aren't mad at each other over that? Does that jibe with what we saw earlier in the season in the first flashbacks with Catherine when they were all competitive? And was the Stefan we saw being compelled? Damon sure wasn't. And they are both human when she is put in the tomb? Sooo...they become vampires by dying with her blood in their systems, not that she turned them, per se? And the thing at the end with Emily and Anna, whuh? I thought Emily didn't like the vampires, and only struck a deal with Damon to save them so he'd spare her family, but she was all, I have an idea!
I did love all the Damon and Elena stuff. It is a very interesting dynamic. The flashbacks though, I mean, I guess it's a little much to expect realism in my vampire show, but come on. I admit I thought the Kelly Hu casting was a little distracting (this was after all the frickin South in the Civil War, so I was sort of thinking it was going to be A Thing in the town, but not so much) but ok, I am supportive of colorblind casting, I can roll with that, but what I can't handwave is that everyone is well fed! And the menfolk are alive and living at home and going to work, etc etc. BECAUSE IT IS THE FRICKIN SOUTH IN THE CIVIL WAR. 1864 no less!! Where is the famine? And the soldiers? And the devastation/deprivation? Or at least some sense of danger or urgency (about something not vampires)? I've seen Gone With The Wind, so I clearly know what I am talking about.
I took today off because my electrical panel needed to be replaced. I can think of no way I'd prefer to drop a grand! *sigh* Someone also came to look at the stove, because it clicks off over 425. The two repairmen overlapped for a few minutes, and there was a hilarious moment of toolbag envy (not a euphemism). Panel guy got one look at stove guy's toolbag and was all, that's most excellent, where did you get it and may I touch it? Heh.
After they left, I took the opportunity to stock up on some things before the snowpacalyse headed this way. THIS IS THE 4TH STORM THIS WINTER HITTING ON A WEEKEND! Why oh why can they never hit during the week, so I could have some days off from work? I will be in my pjs either on my couch watching my very full DVR or on my reading chair reading Fire, the companion book to Graceling, which was AWESOME. (Favorite line from Graceling, from a girl being made to dress up against her will: " If I wanted to stun a man, I'd punch him in the face." Heeeeeee.)
I'm prepared -- I have Diet Coke, milk, cat food and cat litter to last me a while, so I'm good. Also, lots of bird seed to be scattered on my balcony and in the feeder. Helpful for the birds, entertainment for my cats. Good luck to everyone else in the storm's path! At current projections (24 inches) that would be the second biggest storm to hit the DC region in history. (Or, well, in the century they've been keeping records about snowfall.) Bundle up and stay safe!
