welcome new friend!
May. 13th, 2011 12:40 amThe royal wedding, which of course I got up and watched, has probably been talked to death. But worth flagging is the top photo here, in which the dress catches the light in such a way to show the lace detail on the bottom of her gown that I couldn't see at all when watching on tv. So pretty! Well done there all around.
The bad: Stayed home with a cold two days this week. The upshot: I was home when a new visitor came to the local animal restaurant, aka the birdseed out on my third floor balcony.

Why, hello, Mr. Chipmunk! Who knew they were such good climbers? Squirrels come daily and hang out for a long time, birds come all the time but stay only briefly, raccoons come not infrequently and stay for hours, but a chipmunk? A chipmunk was new! It might have been hir first ever visit, based on how apeshit the cats went. The cats are totally blasé about the squirrels now, and even the raccoon is only mildly interesting, but the chipmunk? Very. Interesting. (They do still love the birds, perhaps because they come and go so quickly. Always leave them wanting more!)
The chipmunk did not eat on the balcony, but rather stuffed hir little cheeks full of birdseed and then disappeared over the edge of the railing, and then came back minutes later for rounds 2, 3, and 4.

Look at the little cheeeeeeeeks! So cute! I hope the birdseed fed a whole family and that they all come visit soon!
While home sick, I got cracking on my DVR backlog, and it would figure that just when I get into The Chicago Code, Fox announces that it is canceled. I was really digging that show. It sometimes seems over the top in making the cops extra coppy and the characters extra Chicago-y, but it really felt like it was hitting its stride, and I'm kinda bummed it was axed. Apparently though, they did have an inkling it would go this way, so the final episode will have a resolution of sorts.
And that vaguely seems like a segue into the Vampire Diaries season finale. Most episodes leave me screaming at the tv and flailing with glee that the show surprised me yet again in such an awesome way. This episode struck me as having a whole other energy. I liked it, and things surprised me, but I didn't scream or flail as much as have my head start to whir with thinky thoughts. Stefan, as the Old 97s would put it, Klaus has designs on you! That whole thing caught me off guard. I did not predict the cure so I did not predict the obvious trouble ahead for Stefan. Is he faking? I guess that's what's being set up for next season, just how much of that is an act for Klaus and how much is genuine. But gah, I did not see having to worry about Stefan on this front coming!
Elena and Damon, I don't even know what to think, but I think that was earned, even if I still think it's not very smart of Elena. But you feel what you feel, and even though there are all sorts of reasons to hate him, which the audience knows even better than she does, as many of his misdeeds are known to us but not her, we still like him, so how can I blame her? We watched all the babysteps she took over two seasons to reach that point. It cracked me up a little to hear her deliver a Bridget Jones-esque line, and in the other gender direction. But then I was distracted by wondering how on earth Katherine got in, when Elena had never invited her. Thank goodness I watch with a friend smart enough to remember Elena, you know, died that time, thereby probably breaking the house's seal with her. And even if it theoretically should have passed to Jeremy, well, you know, he died this time too, so I guess it's open season on the house. I was seriously worried there that he might be a goner, so I am glad he's back, but I am worried about the consequences, and not just in the forms of Vicki and Anna, meep!
I do hope we see Caroline reconciling with her mom next season. It's funny; a few weeks ago I was worried the Sheriff would be killed off, but little did I know she'd be one of the few parents left! And I am so rooting for Caroline/Tyler, they both could use a little happiness and so could the show, frankly, because even Bonnie/Jeremy is going to be more angsty now, how could it not be? Worried! Thinky thoughts! Not my normal reaction to a TVD episode, and perhaps not a satisfying culmination of this season's themes (that was last episode) but a start to many storylines ripe for exploitation next season.
