quick thought on Haven 4.9

I don't quite know what I make of this episode, because I'll have to see how the William revelation holds up when I rewatching the Bar(n) scenes from earlier in the season. But way to play creepy, Colin Ferguson! Who knew you had it in you?

The thought has not totally cohered in my brain, but I am thinking William and the original Audrey were in Haven as settlers or colonists or something way back in the day, and that William was somehow at the origin of the Troubles, and that people trying to stop them chose his lady love to be the savior/power the Barn's suppression as a punishment? This idea is partly inspired by Audrey's question to Agent Howard on if she was being punished. And maybe Agent Howard, in addition to being Audrey's minder, also prevented William from interfering? No idea what the sparks when they touch mean. Or what the flower turning into a pile of Trouble ear pebbles means. He seemed disappointed. If his original lady love's memories had resurfaced, would the flower have stayed a flower? Once again, I genuinely don't know where any of this is going, and that pleases me.

In other tv news, I continue to love Hart of Dixie. That show is a ray of sunshine on my tv. It is fucking delightful, and makes me so happy. I watch so many shows with high stakes and tension, I do love that the stakes of a given HOD episode might be, can the best friend and new boyfriend of the main character learn to get along? And Rachel Bilson is so gifted as a comedian, I just ♥ this show.

Agreed 100% about Hart of Dixie! I love that sunny, happy little show. Will Zoe be okay with Joel and Wade becoming friends? Will the people of Bluebell get to like Joel more? What will they cover Jaime King's baby bump with in this scene? I adore it. :)

I do think Lavon's sister is being slightly creepy in pursuing George. If she was a guy and George was a girl, it would sound downright menacing. But I'll give it a break just because in general HoD is so damn cute.

Oh, also, totally agree about Rachel Bilson. Such a great comic actress!

Yeah, Lynly (I thought she was his cousin?) is a little much but HOD characters often are at first (see: Lemon, Brick). I'm sure she'll be calibrated to acceptable levels of wacky in time.

And I totally love how the show has found a way to address meta concerns within the show; I think it's clever. When the season started, I was all, booooo Joel, she should be with Wade (or possibly George). And I love that the town of Bluebell is having the exact same debate. And as Zoe tries to get Bluebell to like Joel, I end up liking him more, too.

The show genuinely doesn't seem to have an endgame for its pairings, which is refreshing. On other shows, you know which pairing is destined, so any other pairing can seem like a diversion or dilly-dallying to stretch the story out. HOD, they seem to go with the flow, so it's not like I can think Joel is purely a delaying tactic. At first, I thought Lemon and Lavon were going to be destined, but the show didn't go there. Same thing with George and Zoe. I can't predict in advance how things will evolve, and I like that.

Yes, of course you're right, she's his cousin! Brainfart. Hopefully she'll be toned down, good point about the previous pattern. She seems way too young for George, though! Let's hope she meets someone else.

And lol, yes, the poll was a really good way of acknowledging what viewers are thinking while effectively dealing with it. I like Joel more and more, too. Like pretty much every character in the show, he has a good heart. That's the thing I love most about HoD - there are no bad guys. No one we're supposed to dislike. Everyone is multifaceted and human, and the things that seem like flaws often become qualities you eventually appreciate.

I thought Lemon and Lavon were destined, too, and I still kind of hope that somewhere down the line that might happen. But it's hard to hope anything bad could happen to Lavon and AB! They are so cute together. They're so good at working with chemistry on the show. It's definitely refreshing.

This is very much the semi-coherent thought I've been having, for a while actually, sort of. It occurred to me last season that original!Audrey went into the original barn sacrifice to stop the the first Troubles as unleashed by settlers to the area. I do like that it could have been as punishment though or simply to keep her and William apart. Agent Howard being the person/thing? that keeps Audrey and William apart though is great because his death explains why William is back.

I'm impressed you had that thought last season! At that time I still didn't know if I thought there was an original Audrey, or if she was a creation made only to do this or what.

You make me think, though, about how Howard said it was important that she went in voluntarily. So maybe original Audrey did choose to save the town by entering the Barn, but that it was arranged that she alone could be the savior was a de facto punishment for William? Don't know!

(Do you ever see season one episodes and laugh when you remember how you thought things worked then? Why, she's an FBI agent investigating some weirdness, that's the whole show. Hahaha....)

I like that. It was something in the discussion of Audrey going into the barn voluntarily that made me think of sacrifice. But now I'm wondering if she went into the Barn instead of killing William or killing someone else. Because the out that killing who she loves most can't be a new idea.

Funny because I quit watching S1 when it first aired because I didn't like that set-up. It bored me. Not enough Duke! hee. Even funnier, I quit watching right before it got interesting, but started again, for some reasons, during the AudreyTwo arc of S2. And watched with growing interest as the larger picture was revealed until The Tides that Bind which is still one of my favorite episodes and really brought the Troubles into focus. I rewatched from the beginning before S3, which was interesting because the hints at a larger mythos is there from the beginning.

I didn't watch S1 because the promo ads didn't grab me. But then someone on LJ (can't remember who) did a picspam pimping to encourage people to catch up before S2 started, and I saw pictures of Nathan and Duke, and decided to give the show a shot. Then I mainlined the show and it ate my brain, and I've been trying to figure out the mythos ever since!

I will admit that my own fascination with early white settlers in New England and their interactions with the indigenous peoples influences my theories. It should also be know that the original version of my theory on the Barn and the first Audrey also included witches and a curse. ;D
