I saw the Veronica Mars movie last night at its NYC premiere!! I met no one, saw the boys from afar (KB did the red carpet and then skedaddled to do more press (one of the late talk show Jimmy's, I think)), and while I took some pics, they are blurry, boo. They had a little tented red carpet in front of the theater, and a little area to wait by the red carpet for the arrivals. We opted not to wait there. My plus one wasn't feeling it, and I think I would have been too shy anyway (well, compared to the other fangirls) to get a moment with anyone, and I knew professional photographers would document the arrivals just fine.

We checked in, got our tickets, and then waited in line for a few minutes until they were ready to let us into the theater. The invite had said "business professional and up." I was in the fanciest dress I own, and overall, most people seemed to be dressed like me -- a bit like fangirl prom in vibe. A few tuxes, but mostly suits/ties on dudes, and nice dresses on the ladies. There were a few schlubs in jeans, but for once, I was not among them. When we went into the theater, there were free bags of popcorn and 20 oz bottle drinks. Thanks, Loews/Slave Rats/whoever! The theater was playing a mix of songs random enough that I was like, these have to be in the movie. And sure enough, they were!

We had assigned seating, and I was in the first row of the Mezzanine. No idea how they came up with who was assigned where (order of Kickstarter donation? order of RSVPing with details to the premiere?), but it meant that I had great seats to watch the movie, but was far away from where the cast stood when they introduced it (1.5 stories up and half a theater back). Others were close to the cast, but would have had a neck crick from sitting 3 feet from the screen, so not sure which is preferable.

Wasn't lying when I called it blurry! My poor little camera was just outmatched by the distance. L to R, that's Enrico, Francis, Percy, Ryan, Chris, and Jason, with Rob out front talking.

Sad that Francis Capra didn't come out well -- his face is blocked by his own camera, alas -- because his appearance was the biggest surprise. So much hair!

Only Rob Thomas spoke, aside from the occasional interjection. He said what he's said before at other forums: thanking Warner Brothers for saying yes to the whole endeavor, and thanking us, the fans, for making it possible. And then it was time for the movie (if the cast stayed, I could not see). Non-spoilery reaction: I basically loved it. I had been trying to keep my expectations in check, but the movie exceeded them. I *wanted* to love it, and was mentally preparing my determination to love it, but that effort was not needed, because I loved it on its own merits. It felt very satisfying to me as a fan. Perhaps that will be to its detriment to its broad appeal as a movie, but I care not. I say bring on the cameos and call backs! I can't really be objective enough to think of how it does as a movie, but it felt like Veronica Mars again, and that was what I wanted. (Someone could probably accuse the movie of shoehorning some things in and not be wrong, but I cared not!) The dialogue was very quippy and smart, and the mystery was pretty satisfying. The Bonnie Demille character was a little hard to grasp, but I wonder how much of that was working around the fact that Leighton Meester did not return? I feel like if she had come back, they would have worked that a little differently. On a shallow note, I may be the only one who does not go for Logan in uniform, but overall that arc was very satisfying to me. And I think the movie ends how it should. My friend was sad for Veronica, but I think it's what is true to her character. Judging purely by claps, squees, and laughs, I'd say the audience was pretty satisfied, too. I'm seeing it again on Thursday as a fan event. Hopefully I get to hear some of the dialogue I missed because people were laughing or clapping over it. And then possibly to see it again over the weekend, because dammit, I am determined that this is a success.

eta -- oh! here in a group selfie by Kristen, you can see Francis Capra's hair!

I could forgive the come back to me/always because he is going off to war, but yeah, that was a little over the top.

I love that it was still about how fucked up Neptune is.

Yeah, and as much as they made her sleuthing be an addiction metaphor, I thought the demonstration that things had gotten worse in Neptune was a compelling reason for her to stay and fight the good fight, instead of being a lawyer who makes frivolous lawsuits go away. There's a lot of fodder for future stories. I hope there's another movie!

Yeah, it was so mixed and complicated--not really a totally right or totally wrong decision. I loved it and I totally agree there's a lot of fodder for future stories. I'm even going to read the follow-up novel, which I never do.

Yeah, me too. I hope there are more movies, but I feel reasonably certain there will be more books, at a minimum. Eeee! The whole thing makes me happy. Veronica Mars, revived, at last!
