Ok, so I have Mac OSX and I just downloaded the new Firefox, and I can't figure out how to make links open in new tabs and it's driving me crazy.

There's no right click on a Mac; I used to just click and hold down, and within a few seconds it would bring up a menu off to the side with Open in New Window, Open in New Tab, Save Link Target as, etc. That doesn't happen now, no matter how long I hold down on a link.

I feel really, really stupid, but what am I doing wrong? I went into my Firefox preferences, and I checked the box for defaulting to opening in a new tab, but with no apparent effect.

Help?

EDIT: Awww, thanks, everyone! I am opening tabs like professional now!

On a PC you can also open things in a new tab by holding ctrl when you click - usually things done with the ctrl key on pc's map to the apple key on macs, so try holding down the apple key when you click on a link.

If I hold down the button, I eventually get the contextual menu and I'm also using OSX and Firefox.

Now that I upgraded to Ffox 2.0, that method doesn't seem to work. Drat.

Yup, that's the way to do it. If you want to get that menu back to do other stuff, hold CTRL while you click the link and that will force the menu to open. But if you just want to open a link in a new tab, hold down the APPLE (COMMAND) key and click away. :)

Aha! Success! Thank you, everyone! :)

Hmmmm, it means I can't browse one-handed anymore, though, which is vaguely annoying, but ultimately less annoying than a kabillion browser windows, so I guess I still come out ahead.

Looks like you and me both will be command clicking from now on!

You can also get a USB mouse with a scroll wheel - generally the scroll wheel acts as a third button, and if you click the scroll wheel on a link or bookmark, it opens in a new tab. I think this is the most convenient way to open new tabs. You can also get mice that have extra buttons on the side for forward and back, etc.

I keep my laptop on the coffeetable, so I don't use any mouse at all, just the track pad.

That is a cool trick to keep in mind at work, though, where I do have such a mouse. :)
