So, apparently the guy Bush appointed to run family planning services at the Department of Health and Human Services DOESN'T APPROVE OF CONTRACEPTION. Like, ever, even for married people.

There's a NYTimes editorial about it, but here are some of the choice quotes:

"Mr. Bush has tapped Eric Keroack, a doctor affiliated with a group vehemently opposed to birth control and someone nationally known for his wacky theory about reproductive health."

"The group also has a policy against dispensing contraception even to married women. It has stated on its Web site that the distribution of contraceptive drugs or devices is “demeaning to women, degrading of human sexuality and adverse to human health and happiness.”

"Dr. Keroack has promoted the novel argument that sex with multiple partners alters brain chemistry in a way that makes it harder for women to form bonding relationships."

"But to the unchastened Bush White House, apparent opposition to contraceptives, abortion and science was the opposite of disqualifying. It was a winning trifecta."

Here's a link to the whole thing.

That would be comical if it weren't so frightening. Contraception is demeaning to women?

Thank goodness he's around to protect us from ourselves, what with our altered brain chemistry and all, we certainly can't make decisions ourselves.

Oral contraception is the only thing keeping my menstrual cycle normal and non-debilitating. Until I started taking it, I was bleeding heavily for up to 14 days and was experiencing mild anemia because of it. I suppose Dr. Keroack's answer to that would be, "If you'd just gotten married and had babies when you were young like you were supposed to, this wouldn't be a problem."

Ass.

Yes, if only you had acted like the breeding horse god intended you to be, you never would have taken something "adverse to human health and happiness."

This is unbelievable. And depressing. I just want to scream at all the people who voted for this idiot.

Perhaps that is just your altered brain chemistry which is preventing you from forming a lasting bond with our wise leader who knows what is best for us!
