OMFG
I know I seem to say this after every episode, but that is because it is true; I am seriously sitting in front of my tv gape-mouthed. :O HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!! I don't even know what to react to first! Hi, Aunt Jenna! RIP, Alaric, although I guess the ending leaves open the possibility that he'll be back as a ghost to Jeremy. I think perhaps that was meant to be reassuring, but it was sort of creepy.
And oooooh, Bonnie, Caroline is going to be so mad at you!! Did it have to be Tyler because he's a hybrid from the bloodline? And what pray tell are Klaus-in-Tyler's plans for Caroline??? If Tyler gets depossessed, would they all die, or could Klaus be transferred?? It was good to see Elijah again, who I had no idea is married to Rachel Leigh Cook in real life.
And I am secretly happy that she chose Stefan, because as hot as she and Damon would be together, she still loves Stefan. But then she did meet Damon first!! (Why was he lying in the road?) And her words were that he was the person who made her feel glad to be alive, so is that still valid?? And I wonder if Stefan is going to hate himself for not saving her? Of course she would have been devastated if he let Matt die. The underwater scenes were lovely and tragic and terrifying. And a little unnecessary: Matt, Rebekah won't die just because you hit her with your truck! But wow, seriously, I did not see that coming. I love this show.
Oh, and if you haven't seen this:
Hahah! Joel McHale's face throughout is priceless.

I was disappointed that Elena chose Stefan, to be honest. I feel like Stefan was a teenage relationship for her, a safe relationship, and choosing to stay in it is choosing to stay in that phase - she has, after all, said that after her parents' death, the immortal Stefan was a safe choice for her. It seems to me that in choosing Damon, Elena would be choosing to grow up.
But I also think that, if Elena is a vampire now, that's obviously a game-changer. I think you're right to question whether being "glad to be alive" is still valid. Also, who has a better handle on the difficulties of being a vampire? It's always been Damon. Stefan says now that he's accepted his dark side he is no longer subject to the extremes of Ripper-good!Stefan that characterised his life until about the middle of this season, but that seemed a little easy to me. Damon may be the one Elena will turn to when she must adjust to her new reality.
All just speculation, of course! Elena being a vampire is crazy. Trust this show to do something like that, though. :D

But...who knows how much of this will be true now that she will be a vampire? I think you are right that Damon will be the one shepherding her.
